For pdfFiller’s FAQs

Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
What if I have more questions?
Contact Support
Contact the state police department in the state that issued the car tag. If your reason for obtaining a tag owner's identity involves an accident or crime, file a police report. Contact the DMV. Complete a request form. Pay the appropriate fee.
Look for the official website of the government agency that issued the license plate. If you can't find the information online, you can always call a motor vehicles' agency office and ask. Explain that you want to find a vehicle's registered owner and the only information you have is a license plate number.
DMV License Plate Lookup Simply go to your local DMV website, or call the number provided, to see if the one in your area provides vehicle and driver records. To learn more about license plate lookups and public vehicle driving records, check out How To Find a Name and Address Using a License Plate Number.
Write down the license plate tag number or the vehicle identification number. Call or personally go into your local department of motor vehicles' office. Go to carfax.com. Go to an online search company or online records search company.
Get the information together. You need to have complete plate number along with the state. Contact your state's department of motor vehicles, abbreviated as DMV. If the license plate's state is different from yours, contact the DMV of that state government (see Resources for its website).
Your local government transport department/office — they will have the registration history of the car. Your local official/authorized dealer network of the car's brand. They should at least be able to tell you who the first owner of the vehicle was.
Look for clues in the license plate itself. If it is a personalized plate, can you draw any clues from this? Go to the Department of Motor Vehicles with the license plate number. Look up the person whose name you were provided in the White Pages or online. Inform the police if a crime has been committed.
Write down the license plate number of the vehicle. Write down the VIN number of the vehicle. Run a CARFAX vehicle history report at carfax.com. Call your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and provide them with the license plate number. If all else fails, hire a company to track down the previous owner.
