These courses are usually short (up to 2.5K in length) with checkpoints (orange and white flags) on paths or visible from the path. Green, blue, brown, and black courses get harder and longer and are only recommended if you have some experience.
Competitors complete a designated course of specific controls in a specific order. An interval start is used with each competitor starting at a different time. There are multiple courses available, each with a different difficulty and length. The winner for a course is the person with the fastest time on that course.
Most commonly they are 1:15000 (1cm=150m) or 1:10000 (1cm=100m) but for orienteering in parks you use a map drawn in a scale of 1:5000. All maps use an internationally agreed set of symbols and these are logical and easy to learn. You should absorb much of the information simply by attending your first few events.
International Orienteering Federation, the governing body of the sport, currently sanctions the following four disciplines as official disciplines in the sport of orienteering: Foot orienteering (FootO) Mountain bike orienteering (MTBO) Ski orienteering (SkiO) Trail orienteering (TrailO)
Advanced courses can be divided into long distance, middle distance and sprint. For instance, a long course can have expected winning times up to 100 minutes (elite men), or 80 minutes (elite women), while a sprint course will have expected winning times 12–15 minutes.
