In the case of crystal meth, this means considering the information in context and examining it in relation to other knowledge that is commonly available and the context of the community and culture. The lesson will also look at how the tools used to address substance use in schools are related to community-oriented interventions for other drug-related problems. It will discuss how the community of the user has evolved through time to include more drug users (especially younger students), and how the role of the family and the teacher in the setting of use, addiction and recovery have developed over the past century. A review of existing school drug education approaches to address school drug use will also be examined, with a focus on how these approaches are related to current trends and the needs of young people. The lessons will discuss the need for schools to be more open to changing approaches and innovative approaches. Keywords: substance misuse, adolescent, school drug abuse, drug education method INTRODUCTION As Canada's health ministers, our shared responsibility is to ensure that, through the public health process, we ensure the health of our population through prevention, treatment, and recovery. It is a common concern for drug users and advocates that we have not kept pace with the rapid rise in the prevalence of drug use in the communities where they live and for which they have a critical need. At the same time, prevention, treatment, and recovery education are important, and school-based strategies are a natural complement to these. However, the evidence base is limited in the amount of information about drug education and school-based approaches related to methamphetamine. This does not mean that we have no idea what works, in part because we have seen considerable success with prevention and treatment, which is supported by research (e.g., see Suss kind et al. [1996]; Leftover et al. [1998]. This is not the case, however, for school-based treatment and recovery programming. The need for an effective prevention, treatment, and recovery program for drug use has prompted a significant effort to investigate the feasibility, effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness of such an approach. For this reason, this lesson will focus on the current status and needs of school drug education programs across North America which may be implemented at the level of schools, schools districts, or school systems. We will also examine the evidence available to inform the development of effective prevention, treatment, and recovery interventions for methamphetamine use. The purpose of this lesson is to help students and school administrators evaluate educational approaches to drug use in schools.
