TMRS is an agency created by the State of Texas and administered in accordance with the TMRS Act, Subtitle G, Title 8, Texas Government Code (the TMRS Act) as an agent multiple-employer retirement system for municipal employees in the State of Texas.
The Texas Municipal Retirement System (or TMRS) is a plan chosen by your city to provide secure retirement benefits to its employees.
TMRS is the primary retirement plan offered by the City. Participation is mandatory and becomes effective on the first day of employment. Your tax deferred contribution will be 7% of your gross income and the City's contribution is approximately twice that amount, depending on actuarial determinations (7%, 2:1).
You contribute a portion of your compensation to TMRS every month. That contribution will be either 5%, 6%, or 7% of your compensation, depending on your city's retirement plan provisions. Your city will deduct that contribution and send it to TMRS.
You become vested when you have contributed to your State of Texas Retirement account for five or 10 years, depending on when you started working for the state.
All Full-time and Part-time employees become members of the Texas County & District Retirement System (TCDRS). Members contribute 7% of their gross salary each pay period to the retirement system. Member contributions are matched by the County (2 dollars for every 1 dollar contributed) at retirement.
