The HRC 2, or Hazard Risk Category, is defined by the NFPA 70E, 2012 Edition to have an arc rating that is greater than or equal to 8 cal/cm², but less than 25 cal/cm². Be careful not to classify HRC 2 as Class 2. Although Class 2 applies to ANSI and other standards, it does not apply to NFPA 70E.
The hunt is held twice each year and any dog with a Hunting Retriever Champion title (100 championship points) is eligible to run. In order to earn the prestigious Grand Hunting Retriever Champion title, a dog must have two Grand passes and an accumulated total of 300 Championship points.
Those points are accumulated to earn the six available titles on your hunting retriever: Started Hunting Retriever(SHR), Hunting Retriever (HR), Hunting Retriever Champion (HRCH), Upland Hunter (UH), Upland Hunter Champion (UHCH) and Grand Hunting Retriever Champion (GRHRCH).
The risk levels are from 1 to 4; HRC level 1 is low risk and HRC 4 is the highest and most dangerous risk level. Level 0 is little to no risk and Level 4 is extreme risk. Which leads to the question what is an HRC? An HRC level is determined by the minimum amount of calories per square centimeter (ATPV or Cal/cm2).
HUNTING RETRIEVER CHAMPION (HRCH) - The Hunting Retriever Champion (HRCH) title is attained by earning one hundred (100) championship points. Sixty (60) of the one hundred (100) points must be earned from the Finished category. Points can be earned in Started, Seasoned, or Finished.
HRC 2 rated garments have an arc rating between 8 cal/cm² and 25 cal/cm² and are often referred to as “daily wear.” HRC 3 rated garments have an arc rating between 25 cal/cm² and 40 cal/cm². HRC 4 rated garments have an arc rating equal or greater than 40 cal/cm².
Those points are accumulated to earn the six available titles on your hunting retriever: Started Hunting Retriever(SHR), Hunting Retriever (HR), Hunting Retriever Champion (HRCH), Upland Hunter (UH), Upland Hunter Champion (UHCH) and Grand Hunting Retriever Champion (GRHRCH).
HRC Hunt Tests Unlike field trials, these are not competitive 1st, 2nd and 3rd place events, but tests where all dogs are judged pass/fail against a "Hunting Standard". These are events that are great fun where everyone can root for the other person's dog and help each other with their training.
