How to fill out your horses vital signs

How to Fill Out Your Horse's Vital Signs:
01
Begin by finding a safe and quiet area to work with your horse. This could be a stall or a quiet corner of the barn. Make sure your horse feels comfortable and relaxed.
02
The first vital sign to measure is the horse's temperature. Use a rectal thermometer and lubricate it with petroleum jelly or a water-based lubricant. Gently insert the thermometer into the horse's rectum, and leave it in place for about a minute. Remove the thermometer and read the temperature. A normal horse's temperature should range between 99.5°F and 101.5°F.
03
Next, you need to measure the horse's heart rate or pulse. Place your index and middle fingers on the horse's lower jaw, just beneath the edge of the cheek muscle. You can also place your fingers on the artery located on the inside of the horse's hind leg, just above the fetlock joint. Count the number of beats for 15 seconds, then multiply that number by four to calculate the heart rate per minute. A normal heart rate for a horse is around 30-40 beats per minute.
04
Moving on to the horse's respiratory rate, observe the rise and fall of the horse's ribs or watch the horse's nostrils to count the breaths. Count the breaths for 15 seconds and multiply that number by four to calculate the respiratory rate per minute. A normal respiratory rate for a horse is between 8-16 breaths per minute.
05
Finally, examine the horse's mucus membrane color. Lift the horse's upper lip and observe the color of the gums. They should be a healthy pink color, indicating good oxygenation. Any deviation from normal pink color could indicate an underlying health issue.

Regularly monitoring vital signs allows them to identify any signs of stress, discomfort, or illness that may impact the horse's performance or overall well-being.
