Music part-1 how to prepare business taxes for self-employed individuals' hi my name is Alan Madden format and chartered accountant today I will show you how to complete form t2125 the statement of business activities this video is meant for self-employed individuals who would like to complete their tax return independently in part one of these two part series I will provide a general overview of completing the form in part two I will focus on specific sections including home office expenses vehicle expenses and capital cost allowance Music completing the identification area enter the following information your name enter your social insurance number the name of your business if you operate it under a name other than your own write it here if you have a business number issued by the CRA enter it here Music enter the address of the business enter the start date and end date of the businesses tax year this is generally from January 1st to December 31st if this is your first year of business enter the date on which your business commenced indicate whether the 2016 year was the first year of your business in this example I'm going to assume that the answer is no write a description of the main product or service that you are selling in this example I'm assuming that Trump Whigs sells yellow wigs in part one of the form enter the total sales for the current year lets assume that Trump Whigs had total sales of 300000 this amount is before GST or HST in part four of the form enter the cost of goods sold during the year lets assume that Trump wakes purchased inventory worth 100000 from its supplier and sold all of it during the year Trump wig started with no inventory at the start of the year enter the gross profit earned during the year this is equal to the difference between the gross sales and the cost of goods sold in our example the gross profit is 200000 this is calculated as follows gross sales of 300000 less cost of goods sold 100000 equals gross profit of 200000 enter the expenses of the business note that only 12 of meals and entertainment expenses is tax-deductible the total business expenses incurred in the year is 32000 enter the net income this is equal to the difference between the gross profit and the total business expenses in our example the net income is 168000 calculated as follows gross profit of 200000 less business expenses of 32000 is equal to net income of 168000 the net income from your business will be added to your personal income for the year, and you will pay tax on this amount based on your marginal tax rate for more tax tips please click on the subscribe button and visit our website feel free to follow us on Twitter Facebook Instagram and Google don't forget to like comment and subscribe to our YouTube channel b as soon as thanks for watching
