How to fill out compost facility - compost

Illustration

How to fill out compost facility - compost:

01
Start by collecting organic waste such as kitchen scraps, yard trimmings, and plant debris. Avoid adding meat, dairy products, or oils as they may attract pests.
02
Create layers of materials in the compost facility. Start with a layer of browns, such as dried leaves or shredded newspaper, then add a layer of greens, such as fresh grass clippings or vegetable scraps. Repeat this layering process until the compost pile is about 3 feet high.
03
Regularly turn or mix the compost pile to promote aeration and decomposition. This can be done using a pitchfork or a compost turning tool. Turning the pile every few weeks helps to accelerate the decomposition process.
04
Ensure that the compost pile remains moist but not waterlogged. It should have the consistency of a damp sponge. If the pile becomes too dry, water it lightly. If it becomes too wet, add more dry materials to balance it out.
05
Monitor the temperature of the compost pile. As decomposition occurs, the pile should heat up. Aim for a temperature between 130-150°F (54-65°C). If the temperature drops significantly, it may indicate the need for more aeration or the addition of nitrogen-rich materials.
