I you hi and welcome back to another edition of history in your own backyard I'm Rachel, and I am here at the old Boone County courthouse in Burlington Kentucky we're here with Matt Becker not how are you today I can't complain how about yourself great thank you so tell me a little about the building well this building is a third courthouse on this site was built in eighteen eighty-nine designed by a company called the McDonald brothers at a Louisville and built by a since Annie contractor as I said it's a third building on this site, and it is one of many buildings very much like it that the McDonald brothers designed and or built somehow I heard that there is a sister building in his in Texas Band era County Texas yeah exact same building made of sandstone, so McDonald brothers took these plans and sold them to Texas in fact these plans I think circulated in other places as well, so there are more of these courthouses around so when was this courthouse replaced this replaced in 1817 courthouse and was constructed in 818 1889 as I said updated periodically since then had an addition in 1959, and then it wasn't outmoded until 2002 when the Boone County Justice Center opened up across the street so when was the last time this was used as a courthouse 2002 last trial took place can you tell me some interesting things about the building the entire top of the building was replaced in 1898 it was a more or less a two or three-story clock tower supported by what looks like wooden railroad trust that's up above us probably 30 feet and that structure was so heavy that was pushing the walls of the building apart, and they recognized it's almost immediately and tried to rectify it decided they couldn't sit a hired Samuel Hanford famous Cincinnati architect to design solution, and then they came in, and they took off the whole top of the building and replaced it with a much smaller bell tower and cupola which is what's on there today and no one really realized this happened I think about 2005 when a picture of the building as it originally looked surfaced, so it's been majorly modified can you tell me any stories interesting stories of events that have happened you know yeah the most famous trial was 1943 the mountain forget the name I'll have to splice this one back in tiger trial Shanghai trial 1943 a young woman was accused of killing her father and brother and wounding her mother and she was tried in here it was a nationwide news I mean at the time did the Allies were marching up the Italian peninsula in World War two and this news was bigger and newspapers than that offensive, so that's what a big deal it was the trial itself she was eventually I don't want to say acquitted, but they decided that she was mentally incapacitated at the time of the murder of the killings, and she was not incarcerated at all yeah it's a big deal and the Boone County Historical Society reenacted that trial here about 10 years ago what is this space used for now at present...
