Hello, my name is Sam Johnson. I’m here at community music where I’ve worked for the last 10 years as a music teacher One of my jobs is to teach the advanced music production side of our foundation degree. I'm here to talk to you about becoming a music technology tutor. Music technology has had this amazing explosion over the last 20 years I'ts a hugely democratic, liberating area of music I'ts enabled loads of people to make music who perhaps might not have been able to make that in a more traditional setting, and therefore we have got a lot of people who are experts at production and technology And a lot of those people want to go on and teach, quite rightly. We are firm believers that teaching other people how to make a beat for example, is sort of useful, but it's the very tip of the iceberg. We do get the odd person here ring us up and say “I can make great beats, can I teach your kids to make great beats” Most of our kids can make great beats actually, that's sort of part of what they are able to do. What we need, or what the market needs, more importantly, is music technology tutors who are able to really exploit their knowledge and bring all of that to new and different ways of making music. Technology has this ability to enable us to go out and work from a laptop in an outreach setting or make the most of limited studio space by bring in a couple of machines. It enables us to record really quickly, it gives our learners the ability to immediately get hands-on experience of making music. So Becoming a music tech teacher really requires you to think beyond just standard production techniques and more about how can I use technology to reach people who might not of otherwise been able to access this work. So we work here at community music a lot with kids who have been expelled from school or who are outside education or employment and training and music technology is a wonderful way to engage them quickly with some of them core music skills. Writing music for film, picture and TV, working collaboratively remixing, recording, recording all sorts of musicians — so classical musicians, rock bands as well as rappers and singers. So, um, my main bit of advice would be to think outside the box — if you excuse the pun, is to really imagine yourself as a music teacher in the broadest sense of the world, and you are just using your technology experience as part of that. But don’t just think of it as purely beats and electronic music, it’s got a lot more to offer than that. So it’s a great idea as someone who is obviously, comfortable using technology to use that skill and then come and get trained with us on the music leader training course which is a 24-week evening course or and intensive 5 weekend course and get yourself qualified so that you can use those real-world skills that you’ve gone— — your technology skills — to go and work in all these wonderful varied community settings, working with kids who have been expelled from school, working...
