Questions & answers

Manuscript format is designed so that your work is easy to read and you are easy to track down should an editor or publisher want to contact you. Prose manuscripts should be double-spaced with margins of an inch to an inch and a quarter. (Poetry can be single-spaced.) Stay away from fancy fonts.
Manuscript pages Use white, 8½ × 11–inch (standard US letter-size) paper with one-inch margins on all sides. Leave the right margin ragged, not justified. Put the author's surname, a short title of the work, and a page number in the upper-right corner of every page except the title page.
How to Format Your Book Manuscript Font: Your font should generally be 12 point Times New Roman. Margins: Your pages should include one-inch margins on all sides (so your top, bottom, left, and right margins should all be uniform). Indentations: For the first line of a new paragraph, you should indent a half-inch.
Use the templates Word makes setting up a manuscript easy with templates. There are both short story and book manuscript templates available for download and use in Word. You don't have to do anything except search in the top box at the opening menu for manuscript, download them, put in your details and type. Too easy.
Go to Layout and select the Page Setup dialog launch icon at the bottom-right corner. On the Margins tab, change the setting for Multiple pages to Book fold. The orientation automatically changes to Landscape.
A manuscript format should feature letter or A4 page size, 12-pt Times New Roman (or similar) font, 1” margins, double-spaced lines, and 0.5” paragraph indents. As well as formatting your document correctly, you'll also need a title page, page numbers, and a header.
