Questions & answers

Attempt to limit your resume to one to three pages—especially if you have fewer than five years of work experience. In the event of more extensive experience, you can include a second or third page if necessary to accurately summarize your relevant experience.
Law school graduates and experienced lawyers often use CVs to highlight their knowledge and skills and to secure employment. If you want a position at a law firm or private practice, it's important that you understand how this application tool can impact your application.
Include details like law firm names, years employed, and your job title. Consider bullet points to keep things organized, but only if your information will still fit on one page. You may also choose to list relevant experience first, even if it's not the most recent.
Be consistent in all sections of your resume. For example, if you use the abbreviation “B.A.” for your undergraduate degree, use “J.D.” for your law degree. if you write out Bachelor of Arts, write out Juris Doctor. The same applies to state names (either spell them all out or abbreviate them all).
Keep the sections on your resume short and simple. The standard headings are education, experience and activities. Some applicants also include honors or skills and interests. Don't include a summary or objectives section because what those would say should be self-evident.
Use design best practices to ensure your lawyer resume stands out. Lead with your lawyer profile or summary statement. Showcase your specialized skills. Use action words to strengthen employment history. Focus on relevant education. Demonstrate your tech understanding. Have an ideal legal practice area in mind.
