If the tick is accidentally pulled apart and the head stays in the skin, there's a risk of being infected with other microscopic organisms. This kind of infection has nothing to do with Lyme disease, but can still be dangerous and unpleasant. See a doctor if part of the tick is left in the skin or if infection occurs.
It doesn't hurt when a tick latches on to your skin and feeds. If you don't find the tick and remove it first, it will fall off on its own once it is full.
After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol or soap and water. Never crush a tick with your fingers. Dispose of a live tick by putting it in alcohol, placing it in a sealed bag/container, wrapping it tightly in tape, or flushing it down the toilet.
Get your tweezers right down on your skin so you can grab as close as possible to the tick's head. Pull up slow and firm. Don't jerk or twist; a nice, steady pressure straight up will do. Clean the bite area again, and your hands, with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.
Rapid removal lessens the risk of disease. This can be tricky, as you need to be careful not to squeeze the tick's body, or allow its head to get stuck inside your cat. Squeezing a tick's body can cause it to expel blood back into your cat, increasing the risk of infection.
If the wood tick's head breaks off in the skin, remove it. Clean the skin with rubbing alcohol. Use a sterile needle to uncover the head and lift it out. If a small piece of the head remains, the skin will slowly shed it. If most of the head is left, call your doctor for help.
No matter how long a tick is attached, it will never disappear inside the body. However, the longer a tick is allowed to feed, the higher the risk is of a disease resulting. MYTH 11 If you leave a tick's head in it will grow a new body!

This kind of infection has nothing to do with Lyme disease, but can still be dangerous and unpleasant. See a doctor if part of the tick is left in the skin or if infection occurs.
A tick is very patient and waits for the right host to come along, with some species of tick larvae surviving as much as 540 days without feeding.
Others include covering it with petroleum jelly or nail polish (in theory to suffocate it), or freezing it off. These are all supposed to make the tick back out of the skin on its own. ... To remove the tick, use narrow-tipped tweezers and grasp it as close to the skin as possible; then pull upward slowly and steadily.
