Pick a typical, full-text page of your book at random. Count the number of words in the top line of text, and then count the number of lines on the page. Multiply those two numbers. Then, multiply that number by the total number of pages in the book.
For those who need a general rule of thumb, a typical page which has 1-inch margins and is typed in 12 point font with standard spacing elements will be approximately 500 words when typed single spaced. For assignments that require double spacing, it would take approximately 250 words to fill the page.
First of all, count the number of words or letters, depending on what you want to count, in the line that you feel has the most words and multiply it with the number of lines that your essay has, this will give you a number and you know the number of words/letters are under the obtained number.
