Why should you black out your license plate?
The general thinking behind pixelating or blurring or covering the license plates is based on the idea that with your license plate number, more information can be revealed about the car's owner, without his or her consent. The argument against obscuring the tags is that the tags are already on open, public view.
Do I need to hide my license plate in pictures?
Yes, folks, that's right: every time you drive your vehicle on a public road, every human with eyes can see your license plate number. And so, ladies and gentlemen, I suggest you stop covering up your license plates when you post pictures or video, because by God it doesn't matter.
How do you block your license plate in a picture?
With the rectangle tool (it's the default I think) outline your license plate. Then click “effects”. From the drop-down by “effects”, choose “blur”. Then click “apply effects”.
Can you post a picture of someone's license plate?
It's usually perfectly legal to post a pic or spell out someone's license plate online because license plates are public information. It's not confidential like a Social Security Number or DMV-ID Number.
What can someone do with a picture of your license plate?
What can they do with the photo/number plate? Next to nothing. They have a keepsake of your interaction, that's about all. They can go to Police, make a statement and provide any other evidence of an offense (video etc) to which the Police can then follow-up and make a decision from there.
Is it OK to show your license plate on Craigslist?
Like not posting your exact location on Craigslist, it is one extra precaution you can take to protect your privacy. It can also prevent people from filing false hit-and-run reports, which they could do if they can match your license plate number with a description of your vehicle.

It's better to be safe than sorry, and it takes barely any time at all to blur a number plate using photo editors online. By pixelating, blurring or covering the number plate of your car before posting a picture online, you're eliminating any sort of chance of a person being able to snoop.
