Each page of each document is assigned a unique Bates number that also indicates its relationship to other Bates-numbered documents. Bates numbers appear as headers or footers on the pages of each PDF in the batch.
Bates numbering (also known as Bates stamping, Bates branding, Bates coding or Bates labeling) is used in the legal, medical, and business fields to place a one or more of identifying numbers, date and time marks on images and documents as they are scanned or processed, for example, during the discovery stage of
Bates Numbers are perceived as digital reference points used to uniquely identify and label each page in a set of documents. By default, Bates Numbers are located in the header or footer of the pages and can include a prefix and or a suffix or even to be combined with the existing header and footer text.
Bates numbering is also used in medical and business records, where it may or may not include labels for the date and time of a page's creation. Bates numbering has been used for well over a century. It gained its name from the Bates Automatic Numbering-Machine, patented in the 1890s by Edwin G. Bates.
