Most Excel users figure out how to lock these references by either toggling through the options with the F4 key or using the $ (dollar sign) symbol in front of the column and/or row references.
The A1 cell can be used in a formula with the following notations: A1 / A$1 / $A1 / $A$1. The function key F4 enters the dollar signs in the correct spots after selecting a cell (or several cells). You can do this by pressing the key several times.
Select the cell below the rows and to the right of the columns you want to keep visible when you scroll. Select View > Freeze Panes > Freeze Panes.
For locking the cell reference of a single formula cell, the F4 key can help you easily. Select the formula cell, click on one of the cell reference in the Formula Bar, and press the F4 key. Then the selected cell reference is locked.
1. Select the cell with the formula you want to make it constant. 2. In the Formula Bar, put the cursor in the cell which you want to make it constant, then press the F4 key.
To lock the table array, click amongst the cell reference within the formula and press the F4 key on the keyboard. Alternatively you could just type the dollar signs in. One before the column reference and one before the row. This is known as an absolute reference.
We want to be sure this doesn't change when we paste it elsewhere. Click on the cell with cell references you want to lock — in this case, C1. Now select the formula in the formula bar so that either the whole formula or just the part you want to lock is highlighted, and then press F4.
Select the cell that contains the formula. In the formula bar, select the reference that you want to change. Press F4 to switch between the reference types. The table below summarizes how a reference type updates if a formula containing the reference is copied two cells down and two cells to the right.
Select the cell with the formula. Enter Edit mode by pressing the F2 key, or double-click the cell. Select the cell reference you want to change. Press F4 to toggle between four cell reference types.
