Look-Up Tables or LUTs are fundamental to many aspects of image processing. An LUT is simply a table of cross-references linking index numbers to output values.
In image processing, lookup tables are often called LUTs (or 3DLUT), and give an output value for each of a range of index values.
Lookup Tables (LUTs) LUTs are typically constructed using an N:1 multiplexer (shown in green in Figure 4b) and an Nx1-bit memory (shown in blue). The example in the figure above is a LUT where N8. The number of inputs of a LUT is calculated as the log base 2 of N.
A lookup table is an array of data that maps input values to output values, thereby approximating a mathematical function. Given a set of input values, a lookup operation retrieves the corresponding output values from the table.
This is achieved by use of a look up table (LUT); a simple LUT will be a linear translation of pixel values to monitor brightness as depicted by the figure below. In the figure above, the level (L) corresponds to the pixel value that corresponds to the mid-gray brightness level on the monitor.
