The next letter is used to identify the type of container. The letter U represents freight containers. The letter J identifies detachable freight container equipment, and the letter Z denotes trailers and/or chassis. The next six digits represent an owner or operator's unique identification number for a container.
All containers have a prefix followed by a serial number which taken together are generally referred to as the container number. This number enables operators and shippers to identify and track equipment which is used in the movement of cargo.
In 1995 there was an ISO agreement concerning container marking codes to depict the length, height and type of container in an easy-to-read sequence. This sequence is composed of four letters or digits that commonly appear right under the container identification sequence.
A container number, also known as container identification number, is a reference number assigned to a freight container for legal and commercial purposes. BIC (The Bureau International DES Containers) uses the ISO 6346 standard when assigning reference numbers to the shipping containers.
It is compulsory for every shipping container to have at least one seal before a shipping line allows the container to be shipped.(1) Seal number is an identification number of a container seal. Each container seal has an individual identification number.

A general purpose container is also known as a “dry container". These shipping containers are fully enclosed, protected from the elements and weatherproof, with a rigid roof, side walls and floor. Dry containers are by far the most common type of container, and as such are used to load most types of normal cargo.

ISO or intermodal containers are used for the intermodal transport of freight. They are manufactured according to specifications from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and are suitable for multiple transportation methods such as truck, rail, or ship.
