The reason why you get the too many cell formats error is because an Excel file can only have approximately 4,000 different combinations of cell formats. At first this might seem like a lot, but think about all the unique formatting characteristics that can be applied to a cell.
Clear All the Spreadsheet's Cell Formatting. Add a Standard Font to all Cells and Remove Fill Colors. Select the Clean Excess Cell Formatting Option. Check out the Style Reduction Tool for Microsoft Excel. Open the File in Alternative Spreadsheet Software.
This problem occurs when the workbook contains more than approximately 4,000 different combinations of cell formats in Excel 2003 or 64,000 different combinations in Excel 2007 and later versions. If two or more cells share the same formatting, they use one formatting combination.
On the Inquire tab, click Clean Excess Cell Formatting. Choose whether to clean only the active worksheet or all worksheets. After excess formatting has been cleared, click Yes to save changes to the sheets or Now to cancel.
To remove cell formatting in Excel, select the cells from which you want to remove all the formatting. Then click the Home tab in the Ribbon. Then click the Clear button in the Editing button group. Finally, select the Clear Formats command from the drop-down menu that appears.
So, to fix the error, choose the data > click on Merge and Center to toggle it off > try the copy the data again. Or selecting the data > choose to unmerge cells > and then copy > now you are able to paste data into other cells.
