What is I in a Riemann sum?
Riemann Sums. A Riemann Sum is a method for approximating the total area underneath a curve on a graph, otherwise known as an integral. We saw that as we increased the number of intervals (and decreased the width of the rectangles) the sum of the areas of the rectangles approached the area under the curve.
How does a Riemann sum work?
A left Riemann sum uses rectangles whose top-left vertices are on the curve. A right Riemann sum uses rectangles whose top-right vertices are on the curve. The graph of the function has the region under the curve divided into 4 rectangles of equal width, touching the curve at the top left corners.

A Riemann sum is an approximation of the area under a mathematical curve between two X values. As an example, take the function f(X) = X^2, and we are approximating the area under the curve between 1 and 3 with a delta X of 1. 1 is the first X value in this case, so f(1) = 1^2 = 1.
