Is there a way to automatically double-space after a period?
Word doesn't have a way to automatically insert two spaces after a sentence, but you can have the grammar checker flag places in your document where you put one space at end of a sentence. Word will now flag each occurrence of a single space after a period, whether it be at the end of a sentence or elsewhere.
Why two spaces after period is wrong?
Hence the adoption of the two-space rule on a typewriter, an extra space after a sentence makes text easier to read. Because we've all switched to modern fonts, adding two spaces after a period no longer enhances readability, typographers say. It diminishes it.
How do I double-space my sentence in Word?
To double-space the whole document, go to Design > Paragraph Spacing, and choose Double. Tip: To double-space only part of the document, select the paragraphs you want to change, go Home > Line and Paragraph Spacing, and choose 2.0.
Are you supposed to put one or two spaces after a period?
Unless you are typing on an actual typewriter, you no longer have to put two spaces after a period. Or a question mark. Or an exclamation point. The rule applies to all end punctuation.
Is it one space after a period?
And, according to nearly all stylebooks, including The Associated Press Stylebook and the Chicago Manual of Style, you always use a single space after a period. The point is, it's not only widely accepted, it's expected that you use only one space after a period. Sorry two-spaces, it's time to make the switch.
