Automatic 180 Day Extension If a student files their Form I-765 in a timely manner, (within 60 days of STEM OPT I-20 issuance AND prior to their EAD end date) they can continue working after their Post-Completion OPT EAD end date until a decision has been made or for 180 days, whichever comes first.
The STEM extension of OPT will be 24 months in duration. Qualifying F-1 students will thus be eligible for a total of 36 months of OPT employment authorization, including the initial 12-month OPT period.
