You can toggle between these two modes by pressing a key; if you don't think you'll ever use the overtype mode, you can also permanently switch it off in Microsoft Word. Press the "Ins" key to toggle overtype mode off. Depending on your keyboard model, this key may also be labeled "Insert."
To enable the INSERT key in order to control Overtype mode, click to select the Use the Insert key to control overtype mode check box. To keep Overtype mode always enabled, click to select the Use overtype mode check box.

Press Alt+F, T to open Word Options. Press Alt+O to move to the Use the Insert key to control overtype mode check box.
However in the search bar, or even the subject line of a message, the insert key is not enabled, meaning it can't be toggled off. reply to a message, or COMPOSE a new message, go to the body of the email, and the insert key once again can toggle Overtype on or off.
Turn Off Overtype Mode Click "Mail" in the left pane and then click the "Editor Options" button in the Compose Messages section to open the Editor Options window. Click "Advanced" in the left pane and then uncheck the "Use the Insert key to control overtype mode" and "Use overtype mode" boxes to turn off overtype mode.
With the keyboard: Press Insert to toggle between overwrite mode and insert mode. The current mode is displayed on the Status Bar.When in Calc: The text cursor must be enabled in the cell or in the input line.
To turn on overtype mode, you first need to start editing the contents of a cell. Once you are editing, press the Ins key. The OVR indicator should appear on the status bar, and what you type will replace the existing contents of the cell, one character at a time.
To disable the overtype mode, simply press the Insert button on your keyboard. To enable it, just press it again. Note: Unlike the Caps Lock key, there is no light on your keyboard that will tell you if overtype is enabled or not.
Go to Home > Replace or press Ctrl+H. Enter the word or phrase you want to locate in the Find box. Enter your new text in the Replace box. Select Find Next until you come to the word you want to update. Choose Replace. To update all instances at once, choose Replace All.
