Press the "Ins" key to toggle overtype mode off. Depending on your keyboard model, this key may also be labeled "Insert." If you simply want to disable overtype mode but keep the ability to toggle it back on, you are done.

Press Alt+F, T to open Word Options. Press Alt+O to move to the Use the Insert key to control overtype mode check box.
Click "Mail" in the left pane and then click the "Editor Options" button in the Compose Messages section to open the Editor Options window. Click "Advanced" in the left pane and then uncheck the "Use the Insert key to control overtype mode" and "Use overtype mode" boxes to turn off overtype mode.
However in the search bar, or even the subject line of a message, the insert key is not enabled, meaning it can't be toggled off. reply to a message, or COMPOSE a new message, go to the body of the email, and the insert key once again can toggle Overtype on or off.
If you have an US English keyboard, pressing Ctrl - [ is equivalent for pressing Esc . This provides an easy way to exit from insert mode. Alternatively use Ctrl - c . If you've vim in easy mode ( -y ), then you've to press Ctrl - l (Control-L) to exit insert mode.
To enable the INSERT key in order to control Overtype mode, click to select the Use the Insert key to control overtype mode check box. To keep Overtype mode always enabled, click to select the Use overtype mode check box.
Insert key toggles Overwrite. In Status Bar near center should see Overwrite - click on it. It is also a toggle. If status bar is not visible it can be turned on from menu - View->Status Bar.

To stop overwriting the next character whenever you type a letter, press the "Insert" key on your keyboard. The Insert key is located to the left of the Home key on most keyboards. You are not warned in any way when you enable or disable the overtype mode.
