What format does iPhone use for photos?
iPhone screenshots are PNG. Apple uses PNG for screenshots because screenshots are often pictures of websites with lots of text. PNG does better with that sort of content than JPG. Camera photos use JPG, which is, by far, the most common format for digital photos.
How do I convert iPhone photos to JPEG?

Is HEIR better than JPEG?
HEIR is not better than JPEG in the sense of producing higher-quality condensed files, but is better than JPEG for handling groups of consecutive images because you can't do that with JPEG (JPEG doesn't handle more than one image file at a time).
