Does Canada still kill baby seals?
Nobody is killing those adorable white baby seals This is despite the fact that Canada has banned the killing of white-coated seals since 1987, and that the Inuit never killed white coats.
Does Canada still hunt seals?
It is illegal in Canada to hunt newborn harp seals (white coats) and young hooded seals (blue backs). When the seal pups begin to molt their downy white fur at the age of 1214 days, they are called “ragged-jacket” and can be commercially hunted. In 2009, Russia banned the hunting of harp seals less than one year old.
Is the Canadian seal hunt still going on?
Harp seals form the majority of the Atlantic hunt, and in 2012, the Canadian government estimated there were 7.7 million of them on the Atlantic coast. But they've now rebounded so successfully that their populations are almost as large as they were when much of Canada was still New France.
Are seals endangered in Canada?
Seals are not endangered According to Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the seal population is healthy and abundant. None of the seals hunted commercially are at risk, and are indeed listed by CITES as a species of the least concern. Only adult seals are hunted.
Do they club seals in Canada?
Animal rights groups oppose the clubbing and shooting of young seals. Why do hunters club seals? It's safe and easy, and it preserves the seal's valuable pelt. Federal laws in Canada give a sealer three ways to hunt his prey.
Why the seal hunt is good?
Seals are a sustainable resource and are in abundance. Speaking of sustainability, seals are part of the reason why fish stocks are very low (although overfishing is also a big issue) and the seal hunt not only provides jobs and resources for the hunters, but also allows the fish populations to regenerate (a bit.)
Do they still hunt baby seals?
But law prohibits hunters from killing pups that have yet to grow out of their white coat, like this baby's. Harp seals aren't endangered, but melting ice because of climate change is killing pups. A female seal swims beneath sea ice. Seal pups nurse for nearly two weeks before they must fend for themselves.
Do they still club baby seals?
Why do hunters club seals? It's safe and easy, and it preserves the seal's valuable pelt. By law, you have to keep clubbing the seal in the forehead until you know for sure that it's dead. Sealers are supposed to palpate a pup's skull after they've clubbed it, to feel the caved-in bone beneath the skin and blubber.
