The initial document that I needed was insufficient on the site (the word SAMPLE was written across the document multiple times per page). And, although it took several hours, PDFfiller was able to upload the necessary document. Problem solved.

In Preview, open the PDF file you want to encrypt. Select “File” and then “Export.” Click “Encrypt,” select a password, and then retype it to verify. Click “Save.”
How do I Encrypt a PDF in Chrome?
Protect PDFs with a password on your Chromebook. Choose the Select A File button, or drag and drop your PDF into the drop zone to upload. Create a password between six and 32 characters. Enter the password and retype it to confirm. Click Set Password.
How do I password protect a PDF in Chrome without password?
