A serial interface is a communication interface between two digital systems that transmits data as a series of voltage pulses down a wire. A “1" is represented by a high logical voltage and a “0" is represented by a low logical voltage.
A port, or interface, that can be used for serial communication, in which only 1 bit is transmitted at a time. A serial port is a general-purpose interface that can be used for almost any type of device, including modems, mice, and printers (although most printers are connected to a parallel port).
A serial port is male in gender, and has either 9 pins or 25 pins. The shape of the port is slightly D-shaped. A serial computer port may be used for a mouse, external modem, scanner, or other linking software such as for a personal data assistant (PDA). Only very old computers have a 25-pin serial port.
Cisco HDLC is the default for data encapsulation at Layer 2 (data link) of the Open System Interconnection (OSI) stack for efficient packet delineation and error control. Note Cisco HDLC is the default encapsulation type for the serial interfaces.
fast Ethernet vs serial interface. Moreover, the serial interface of a router generally hold the traffic of all internal PCs towards the internet. So it has to be faster than internal Ethernet as far as using switches makes any communication between two PCs a one to one communication.
TL;DR: Old Ethernet was a completely serial medium, but modern fast Ethernet can send data in both directions at the same time, so it is somewhat parallel. Over fiber-optic cable, multiple light frequencies (colors) can be used to add further parallelism. Traditional Ethernet is a serial communications medium.
Look at the back panel of the router when it is standing vertically. Step 2: You can find the model and serial number on the sticker at the back. If there is no version number beside the model number, this means it is version 1.
To locate the default username and password for the router, look in its manual. (If you've lost the manual, you can often find it by searching for your router's model number and manual on Google. Or just search for your router's model and default password.) Look for a sticker on the router itself.
Open up a web browser and type in the IP address of the ADSL Router (default is 192.168. 1.1). Press Enter. Enter the Login name and password (default is admin/admin). Click on the Tools tab at the top. Click on the Restore button to factory reset on the unit.
Click the Start and then click the Programs folder. Next, click the Accessories and then the System Information folder. In the System Information window, click the + symbol next to Components. Click Modem and on the right side of the window you should be able to locate complete information about the modem.

The serial number is located on the label of your Orbit product.
Orbit Wi-Fi systems come with a default password which is the word password itself and a default username that is supposed to be admin. To replace these login credentials you need to log in to the router and access Advanced settings.
If you can see the DTE/DCE cable, you can tell by looking which router has the DCE interface connected to it — the letters "DTE" or "DCE" will either be molded into the connector itself, or if it's an older cable there should be a little piece of tape on the cable that tells you what the interface type is.
DCE stands for data circuit-terminating, data communications, or data carrier equipment — this is a modem or more generally, a line adapter. DUE stands for data terminal equipment which generally is a terminal or a computer. Basically, these two are the different ends of a serial line.
