Whether you’re an instructor or a student, your first step in using Canvas is to set up your Canvas profile and notifications. You’ll also want to be sure your email provider accepts emails from Canvas so you'll receive your notifications. First things first, log in at carmen.osu.edu. Once you click the big Login button you’ll be taken to the Carmen landing page. Select a course in Canvas to jump to that system. For what we’re showing here, students and instructors have the same options. Within Canvas, click Account from Canvas’s global navigation menu, which is always available along the left-hand side of the screen. Choose Profile. A number of things will show up here but what we're mostly concerned with now are the ways to contact you. By default, all communication from Canvas will be sent to your lastname.#@osu.edu address. If you want to reply to a notification message using any other email address, the address you reply from must be listed here or your comment will not be included in the thread. Click Add Email Address to register the new email. [typing] You will have to confirm that from the other email address. You can add as many addresses as you will need. If you want to receive notifications via text message you can add that contact. You'll also see Canvas app push notifications listed here as well. Once you’ve managed your profile, click Notifications in the left-hand menu. Here's where you'll choose what type of notifications you would like to receive via each contact method that you set up, and when you would like to receive them. Select to receive notifications Immediately, Daily, Weekly – which are sent to all users on Saturdays - Or not at all. You have many different kinds of notifications that you can receive. Instructors have more options than students do. Finally, to be sure you receive all the notifications you just set up, whitelist all Canvas emails through your email provider or application. To demonstrate, we’ll use the faculty and staff webmail client, but there will be similar steps for other systems. Click Options in the upper-right corner of the screen and select “See All Options”. For students using BuckeyeMail, click the gear icon in the upper-right hand corner and select Mail from “My app settings”. From the left navigation menu, click Block or Allow. This is true for both students and staff. Add the Canvas notification email which is notifications@instructure.com to your list of Safe Senders. Click the plus button to save the address. If you’re forwarding your lastname.#@osu.edu email to a non-Ohio State system, be sure to check the Spam folder for Canvas notifications and see your email provider’s documentation for how to add the Canvas notification email to your list of safe senders.
