Temporary Vehicle Registration. Temporary vehicle registration allows temporary movement of a vehicle under specific circumstances, including: The vehicle is not registered. The vehicle is registered in a state that does not have a reciprocity agreement with Texas.
A TC number is a temporary authorization of transit in specific conditions. As per the law, the owner of a new car is not supposed to take possession of the vehicle until the registration is complete. Section 41 states that a trade certificate holder shall not use any vehicle in (a) public place.
A temporary registration is valid for a period of 30 days from the date of issue. Afterwards it can be renewed unto three months in the case of heavy vehicles for which a body has to be built. But even after a delay of one year, nothing can stop your permanent registration, provided you pay the penalty for the delay.
Is there a penalty for vehicles displaying expired temporary license plates? Yes. Drivers will be issued a correctable offense citation similar to the citation they receive for displaying expired registration or not displaying permanent license plates.
If you're caught driving it without plates and insurance, you could be charged with driving without registration which nets a $60-500 fine under the Highway Traffic Act. And driving without insurance is even pricier. “Any vehicle that is driven on a public road must have insurance and be plated.”
Temporary registration is issued to a new vehicle to transport it from the place of Purchase to the place of Registration. The Temp. Reign. Is issued for a period of 7 days. But for a chassis to which a body has to be built, the validity is for one month.
You will need to first obtain Form 20 from the RTO or download it. You will then have to key in the required details and submit the form along with the required documents to the RTO in your jurisdiction.
The fee for a temporary registration is $20. Once your vehicle has been safety inspected, you may apply for your one or two year registration plates. You will need to bring the following documents to the registration section of any full service office.
