Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Legislation requires that a PGD must be signed by a doctor (or dentist) and a pharmacist and guidance states that they should be involved in the development of the PGD.
A PSD is an instruction to administer/supply a medicine written in the patient's notes (this also includes an electronic record made in the notes where it is identifiable to the prescriber). A Patient Group Direction (PGD) template that has been renamed a PSD and used to instruct healthcare staff.
Patient Group Directions (Pads) provide a legal framework that allows some registered health professionals to supply and/or administer specified medicines to a pre-defined group of patients, without them having to see a prescriber (such as a doctor or nurse prescriber).
A Patient Specific Direction (PSD) is a written instruction, signed by a prescriber for medicines to be supplied and/or administered to a named patient after the prescriber has assessed the patient on an individual basis.
How long is a PSD valid for? There is no legally valid period for a PSD for administration of a medicine, but good practice dictates that the prescriber should include a start and finish date in the direction to ensure it is acted on within a time frame appropriate to the needs of the patient.
Patient Group Directions (Pads) have been used in clinical practice for a decade. The review concludes that while Pads may be an acceptable way to deliver care, their impact on patient outcomes and health status has been poorly studied.
1 PGDs must be authorised only by an appropriate authorizing body in line with the Human Medicines Regulations 2012. 1.4. 2 Address barriers that may delay authorizing PGDs, such as lack of clear leadership, ownership and understanding of legislation and governance arrangements.
Published 8th May 2015, updated 2nd January 2020. A Patient Group Direction (PGD) is a written instruction for the sale, supply and/or administration of medicines to groups of patients who may not be individually identified before presentation for treatment.
