While not required in Iowa, keeping a record of all notarial acts in a Notary journal is strongly recommended.
A single document can be notarized for $25 using Notarize. Each additional notary seal will cost $10 but most documents only require one.
For a notary commissioned by the Secretary of State, the stamp MUST include: (1) name, (2) the words “Notarial Seal” and “Iowa”, (3) the words “Commission Number” followed by your commission number, and (4) the words “My Commission Expires” followed by the expiration date or a blank line to write in the date.
For a document to be notarized, it must contain: 1) text committing the signer in some way, 2) an original signature of the signer, not a photocopy (if a signature is required). 3) a notarial “certificate,” which may appear on the document itself or on an attachment.
Using a video and audio chat service, the notary observes the signer put a wet ink signature on the document. Then, the signer has to mail the physical document to the notary, who then stamps each signature with their official seal.
As a remote Notary, you can perform notarizations for signers in any location as long as you're physically located within Iowa at the time of the notarial act.
