A t-test tells you whether the difference between two sample means is “statistically significant” — not whether the two means are statistically different. A t-score with a p-value larger than 0.05 just states that the difference found is not “statistically significant”.
If your p-value is less than or equal to the set significance level, the data is considered statistically significant. As a general rule, the significance level (or alpha) is commonly set to 0.05, meaning that the probability of observing the differences seen in your data by chance is just 5%.
Usually, statistical significance is determined by calculating the probability of error (p value) by the t ratio. The difference between two groups (such as an experiment vs. control group) is judged to be statistically significant when p = 0.05 or less.
Significantly different means in statistics this change or difference happen not happened by random chance, but there is a special cause beyond this change or difference.
If the exact probability is less than the critical alpha level, your finding is significant, and if the exact probability is greater than your critical alpha level, your finding is not significant. Using a table is not necessary when you have the exact probability for a statistic.
Make a data table showing the number of observations for each of two groups, the mean of the results for each group, the standard deviation from each mean and the variance for each mean. Subtract the group two mean from the group one mean. Divide each variance by the number of observations minus 1.
Often, researchers choose significance levels equal to 0.01, 0.05, or 0.10. But any value between 0 and 1 can be used. Test method. Use the two-sample t-test to determine whether the difference between means found in the sample is significantly different from the hypothesized difference between means.
