What is the correct order of draw?
Order of Draw. Correct Order of Blood Draws: blood culture, light blue, red, gold, dark green, light green, lavender, light yellow, gray.
What is the order of draw?
Order of draw is the tube sequence a certified phlebotomist needs to follow while collecting blood. Each tube is differentiated by the tube additive and color. A trained phlebotomist using the correct order of draw ensures they obtain a quality sample to be used for diagnostic purposes to provide accurate results.
What is the order of draw when using a syringe?
The same order is used when transferring blood from a syringe to the evacuated tubes as it is with Order of Draw. Do not push on the plunger of the syringe when tubes are filling. The vacuum of the tubes will draw the sample from the syringe until the tube is filled.
How do you remember Order of phlebotomy?
What mnemonic do you use to remember or teach the proper order of draw? (example: “Studious Boys Rarely Get Low Grades” = Sterile, blue, red, green, lavender, gray.)
What is the importance in using the order of draw?
The order of draw is recommended for both glass and plastic venous collections tubes when drawing multiple specimens for medical laboratory testing during a single venipuncture. The purpose is to avoid possible test result error due to additive carryover. All additive tubes should be filled to their stated volumes.
Why is the order of draw so important?
To avoid cross-contamination of additives between tubes, blood must be drawn in a specific order. The procedure is the same for all types of tubes or instruments used. It is vital that the order is followed not only to avoid contamination, but also to ensure accuracy of test results.
How do you collect a patient's blood sample?
Ask the patient to make a fist. Avoid pumping the fist. Grasp the patient's arm firmly using your thumb to draw the skin taut and anchor the vein. Swiftly insert the needle through the skin into the lumen of the vein. The needle should form a 15-30 degree angle with the arm surface. Avoid excess probing.
How do you put a needle in a blood draw?
If properly inserted blood should flash into the catheter. Attach the needed tubes or syringes to remove the proper volume of blood. Remove the needle from the patient's arm and press down on the vessel with gauze.
