How do you fix a log in a log home?

The answer to all of these questions is “yes.” If they are well-built, cared for and in a desirable location, log homes do hold their value. They are also better credit risks, and frequently take up to 2 years to research log homes before making a purchase (as opposed to 6-7 months for conventional buyers).
How do you repair a rotted log?
Make a vertical cut on either side of the soft spot to the depth of the soft wood. Then use a coal or vibrating chisel and hog out the rotted wood until you reach solid sound wood. Level out the area to a flat surface. Coat the area with Shell guard RTU (borate) to prevent further expansion of rot.
How do you repair a rot in a log home?
If the logs have some surface rot, you can chisel out the rotten part of the log down to good solid wood. Then drench the problem area with a wood preservative such as Penetrate. This wood preservative would be the water-soluble type which is a borate compound. Then use wood epoxy to cover the area in need of repair.
