How can you tell if a notary stamp is real?
They can easily be found by searching at the American Society of Notaries. Most tax preparation companies also have a notary public available. Make sure the notary is authorized to notarize your documents by requesting to see the actual stamp imprint and the validity year.
What does notary stamp look like?
Notary Stamp: Notary seal stamps are inked rubber stamps that imprint state required information usually the Notary Public's name, state of commission and date of commission expiration. Notary stamps are usually rectangular, but some states require a round stamp.
Are there different types of notary stamps?
However both signature guarantees and notary stamps serve their own unique purposes, are conducted by different people and are used on different types of documents. To quickly summarize, signature guarantees, also known as medallion guarantees are for financial documents and notary stamps are for legal documents.
Can I notarize without my stamp?
All 50 states require public notaries to place their respective stamp on documents as a means to finalize and authenticate the service. Without this stamp, the document is not legally notarized. Placing the notary stamp over the signature may void the document, negating the notary's work.
What happens if you notarize something incorrectly?
What happens if a notary makes a mistake? The National Notary Association suggests that even the smallest mistake could have dire consequences. The notarized document could get rejected. A mistake that results in a rejection can result in late fees and penalties on the part of the client.
Can notaries get in trouble?
Notary trouble The answer is yes, but they generally don't get caught. If you are a notary public, it is your responsibility to know your state notary laws, and keep up to date with law changes. Notary laws change little by little, year by year.
What happens if you fake a notary?
The bond a Notary Public is required to post is meant to ensure that the injured party can recover up to $10,000, but the Notary can still be held personally liable for any damages he or she has caused and may be subject to criminal prosecution and revocation or suspension of his or her notary public commission.
Can you alter a document after it has been notarized?
Can I make changes or corrections to an already notarized document? No. A notary public must never change, correct, or amend a notarial certificate at a later date. Such alterations can only be made at the time of the execution of the notarization when the principal signer is present.
