Does ammo need to be locked up when flying?

You may transport unloaded firearms in a locked hard-sided container as checked baggage only. Declare the firearm and/or ammunition to the airline when checking your bag at the ticket counter. The container must completely secure the firearm from being accessed. Locked cases that can be easily opened are not permitted.

Should you lock your luggage when flying?

The TSA and Luggage Locks You have no way of knowing who's going to have access to those personal items while the bag is out of your possession, so locking the bag provides at least some peace of mind. But all checked baggage is subject to screening, and agents may cut off those locks if they're not TSA approved.

Should I lock my luggage when flying internationally?

The TSA has master keys that allow agents to open all TSA-approved locks, if they determine that your bag needs extra screening. Note that not all security officers outside the U.S. have the same master keys, so even a TSA-approved lock could be cut off if you're traveling internationally.

Is it necessary to lock checked luggage?

What is a TSA approved luggage lock?

A TSA Approved Lock is simply any lock that has the Travel Sentry logo on it. Travel Sentry was created in 2003 and is the group in charge of overseeing the creation and approval of luggage locks that can be opened by aviation security agencies like the TSA.

Are you allowed to lock luggage on flights?

Luggage locks are permitted by TSA, especially if they're TSA approved (meaning security agents can open any of these locks with a master key). If you're using a lock that isn't approved by TSA, that won't affect your bags from being opened for a close inspection.

Can TSA open my gun case?

The TSA is not allowed to open the gun case themselves and using a TSA-master-keyed lock (such as is sold for luggage) is against Federal law. 49 CFR 1540.111(c) (iv) The container in which it is carried is locked, and only the passenger retains the key or combination.

Do gun cases require TSA locks?

According to regulations, your gun case can be integrated with a lock, or you can use a case with a separate lock. Do not use TSA approved locks for your gun case. TSA approved locks compromise the security of your firearm. Remember, the law states that you ALONE maintain possession of the keys to your gun case.
