If you change the MX records before setting up those mail accounts, or make an error when changing the MX records, emails sent to you may bounce back to the sender or be lost.
It can take up to 72 hours for the new records to update through the system. During this time, mail sent to your domain might bounce.
In the DNS Zone Editor, select the domain you're modifying from the drop-down menu. Scroll down to MX (Mail Exchanger). Find the MX Record you wish to change, then click Edit. Update the information as necessary. Click Save.
Nameserver changes can typically take 0 to 24 hours to take effect, but they are known to take as long as 48 hours to go into full effect. DNS zone record changes such as A, MX and CNAME records can typically take 0 to 4 hours to resolve but are known to take as long as 8 hours to fully propagate.
Name server changes usually take 24 to 48 hours to fully start working. This period, called propagation, is the projected length of time it takes for root name servers and cache records across the entire web to be updated with your website's DNS information.
As long as the system pointed at by the MX record has an A record itself, then yes. For example: example.com can have an MX record pointing at mail.otherdomain.com. As long as the name mail.otherdomain.com itself is resolvable to an IP address, this is a valid configuration for example.com.
You are not required to have MX records just to send email. However: you must use a valid, existing and working email domain as sender address in all outgoing traffic (sending mail from something@nonexistentdomain.com is not allowed) ... If a domain must be able to receive mail, set up valid MX records.
MX records are Mail Exchange records. They are used to set up email on your domain (like mail@yourdomain. ... So if you don't set up MX records in your DNS, you won't be able to send or receive emails on your email address.
The MX-record contains the host name of the computer(s) that handle the emails for a domain and a prioritization code. Emails are routed through to the IP address which is set in the A-record of the host. The A-record (or address-record) determines which IP address belongs to a domain name.
Unlike other DNS, you can create duplicates, pointed to different destinations for fail safe reasons. MX records typically do not have any Host values. MX records should not resolve directly to an IP address, but instead an email server — provided by your email host.
