811 in Your State Each state has its own 811 call center to help you get digging. Choose your state to find information about your area. An 811 representative will take information about your project and notify appropriate utility companies to mark buried lines, so you can dig safely around them!
The law, in all states, generally provides that anyone excavate must call the 811 utility-locate hotline before digging begins to have all utilities located and marked. But as of January 1, the law has changed.
Before You Dig. What is 811? When you make the free call to 811 a few days before you dig, you'll help prevent unintended consequences such as injury to you or your family, damage to your property, utility service outages to the entire neighborhood and potential fines and repair costs.
