How do I upgrade my other than honorable discharge?
You can apply to the Discharge Review Board (DR) of your branch of the service for a discharge upgrade or a change in the discharge reason (that is, character of service).
Can I get my other than honorable discharge changed?
Upgrading your other than honorable discharge is easier than ever. The VA and DoD just made changing your military discharge a little easier. Veterans who believe their discharge was unjust, erroneous or warrants an upgrade are encouraged to use the tool and then apply for review.
Is other than honorable discharge bad?
An other than honorable discharge is an administrative discharge where your command can essentially kick you out. Below that, there's a bad conduct discharge, which is for pretty serious crimes. And then the worse, really, is a dishonorable discharge, which is reserved for things like treason and spying.
Can you get VA benefits with another than honorable discharge?
If you received a discharge under conditions “other than honorable,” you ordinarily are not eligible for most VA benefits. As long as you served for a total of 24 months, you can be eligible for benefits such as education and health care. Your eligibility for disability compensation will depend on some complex factors.
Can you get your military discharge changed?
Under the law, you must make your application for discharge upgrade within 15 years of discharge. If your discharge is older than 15 years, you must apply for a change to your military records. You should use a DD Form 293, Application for the Review of Discharge or Dismissal from the Armed Forces of the United States.
Does another than honorable discharge show up in a background check?
Probably not, as the background check involves convictions. The BOTH is an administrative characterization of your military service not evidence of a criminal conviction.
Are you considered a veteran if you have another than honorable discharge?
Generally, in order to receive VA benefits and services, the veteran's character of discharge or service must be under “other than dishonorable” conditions (e.g., honorable, under honorable conditions, general) as stated by law (Title 38, United States Code).
Is other than honorable discharge considered a veteran?
Eligibility for veteran's benefits also depends on the character of the discharge. There is honorable, general under honorable conditions, other than honorable, bad conduct and dishonorable. Most times the person is not considered a veteran.
