Crop and pasture products. Organic Crop and pasture products. (Note the term 'organic' in the above definition of 'carbon dioxide' in some countries). Carbon dioxide is formed by reactions of carbonate salts with water. The rate of reaction is dependent on the amount of water present, the temperature of the salt solution, the presence of other organic materials and the presence of other dissolved organic chemicals. It is this last ingredient, as well as the concentration of the organic compounds, which determines the ultimate result, carbonic acid. This type of reaction is a major source of greenhouse gases, in fact, most of the carbon dioxide which enters the atmosphere comes from this one particular combination of carbonates(sodium, chlorine, bicarbonate, etc.) and bicarbonate salts. The primary effect of this reaction is to produce two chemical gases with the name carbon dioxide. As the reaction continues, more carbon dioxide is absorbed into solution. The rate of absorption is the same no matter which salts and/or organic gases are added. This reaction is an important one because we humans rely on it for all the oxygen we require. CO2 gas has four important effects on all of us. First, it increases the temperature of the Earth as it diffuses from the atmosphere to the surface. Second, it absorbs thermal energy to drive plants and animals to increase the carbonate saturation in the soil. Lastly, it also prevents other gases and water from dissolving in the oceans, providing protection against the harmful effects of global warming. In addition, carbon dioxide gas does not provide the kind of heat energy which drives plant growth. In fact, plants do not need to grow as quickly or as far relative to CO2 gas to attain the rate of growth they do when there is enough CO2 gas in the atmosphere. Plants absorb CO2 in a process called photosynthesis, and they produce food from the CO2 in one of three ways: respiration, uptake by roots, or transfer through the plant. When there is more CO2 in the atmosphere than the plants have energy to absorb, they must grow faster to compensate. As the plants grow and become larger, they need to take up greater amounts of water. Because the amount of water needed to maintain plant growth is proportional to the size of the plant, plant growth slows. As a result, water becomes scarce, which increases the rate of evaporation.
