NEAR) has filed an application for approval of a plan of work (Pow) for exploration for poly metallic nodules in the Area of the South Atlantic Continental Shelf (SACS), comprising two blocks of approximately 11,300 km2, and to include exploration for boron and plagioclase (previously known as poly metallic nodules), in the Areas of the South Atlantic Continental Shelf (SACS) that lie within the Area of the South Pacific Shelf (APP3, App2.1). The Area is a critical part of the Nauru Geothermal Project (NGC). The NEAR application seeks to conduct a comprehensive drilling program for boron and plagioclase for a period of 45 months to 18 months. The drilling program is planned to include at first, approximately 14 boreholes for the treatment and storage of poly metallic nodules by a single contractor, and in the second stage, for a series of additional boreholes for the treatment and storage of poly metallic nodules. The NEAR Pow application also seeks to conduct two additional series of boreholes for poly metallic nodules in the areas of the Area of the South Pacific Shelf (APP3, App2.1). 2. NEAR seeks to recover boron and plagioclase in the areas of the SACS that lie within the area of the Area of the South Pacific Shelf (APP3, App2.1) where the oil and gas production potential is expected to be highest with the highest oil and gas potential, where natural gas production is also expected to be highest, and where the potential oil and gas resources to be produced in the areas will be at or above the highest point in the existing area. The NEAR application for the NGC in the Area of the South Pacific Shelf (APP3, App2.1) includes the exploration of the geothermal area of the area, which includes, amongst other places, areas of the Area of the Oceanic Continental Shelf (ACS) on the South Pacific side, and areas of the South Atlantic Continental Shelf (SACS) on the North Pacific side. 3.
