Degree Requirements The Iowa Master of Accountancy degree requires a total of 36 semester hours for admission to the program, including the following core requirements: a 3.0 grade point average in courses numbered 1200 or higher; a minimum 2.5 grade point average in courses numbered 300 or higher. For students who have completed at least 18 semester hours already, however, 12 must be outside Iowa State's area of specialization. Students, including those with a 3.0 cumulative GPA and a 3.5 cumulative ACT or SAT score that scores in the upper half of the scale, may be eligible for a waiver by presenting a 2.5 or higher score on the ACT or SAT or satisfactory Academic Progress (SP) report. A waiver will be determined at the discretion of the program faculty and may be approved in such circumstances as exceptional extenuating circumstances, if the student has completed at least 12 semester hours outside one's area of specialization, or has demonstrated academic success that warrants waiver. A student who receives a waiver on the basis of an academic year is also eligible to receive a waiver on the basis of the following one course: three upper division courses for accounting, three upper division courses for taxation, and five accounting and tax accounting courses. Students who complete the minimum requirement set up by the course-by-course nature of the program in any year are also eligible for waiver of the required minimum of 12 semester hours. D. Admission Requirements There are two methods for admissions to the master's degree in accountancy: first, students applying through the Associate of Arts and Sciences program, and second, students entering the program directly based on the requirements set in the Master of Accountancy program description. Admission to the Associate of Arts and Sciences program for students seeking a master's in accounting is through the graduate admissions committees of the School of Business and Economics and the School of Economics.
