For information related to this memorandum, please contact the Naval Oceanographic and Atmospheric Research Laboratory, Ocean Sensing and Prediction Division, Remote Sensing Branch, Tennis Space Center, San Diego, California, Telephone:, e-mail: The National Weather Service has prepared a publication entitled, Coastal Currents of the West Coast, and Coastal Waters to which this memorandum is addressed. In particular, this memo discusses the role of the NOAA Great Lakes and the NOAA Coast Guard Cutters operating in the waters west of the Continental Divide, as well as the importance of their contributions to the NOAA National Data Buoy System that links the coast with the National Weather Service. The publication contains the results of a three-year study to obtain a comprehensive coastal current dataset covering the coast except the area directly within the limits of the Great Lakes and those portions bordering waters to the western Atlantic. The study, performed by NOAA and the USGS, involved a detailed analysis of coastal current measurements collected by vessels operating in the Great Lakes, and was conducted based on the use of satellite-based marine vessel tracking systems. The project collected data on a 24-hour-per-day basis from June 1, 1990, through October 1991. The study covered a wide range of parameters, as represented in the data set, and encompassed a variety of spatial scales. For example, surface wind speeds, along with those at the top and bottom of waves, as well as a variety of wind speed and direction parameters, are available from the high frequency telemetry of these satellites. In addition, a wide variety of other parameters such as wave height, distance between waves (wave length), wave velocity, wave magnitude, and other data are available from the radar altimeters on these types of vessels. Data from these sources provide a more complete description of the environment of a region than is usually available from surface observations alone.
