This report covers a broad range of topics of interest to the media and transportation professionals. It shows that a broad-based collaboration between city and media organizations may be feasible as long as there is an overall consensus of how best to develop, implement and report the research goals, objectives, findings, and recommendations. The findings from this workshop will be presented at the annual Society for Automotive Communications Conference in October 2004 in Dallas, Texas at “Transportation Research” which will be held at the Dallas Convention Center. In the process, the Media Network gained a great deal of insight into the challenges media organizations faced in producing quality research on traffic, traffic safety, pedestrian and bicycle safety, public attitudes and behaviors about traffic, traffic engineering and management, and the media. In addition, the findings of this study include the following: Traffic, transportation and roadway professionals and citizens alike generally expect the media to do a better job of reporting the safety, safety data, public information, and traffic safety issues. Many people have come to rely upon the media for information about traffic and transportation issues. With that in mind, there is a strong motivation to conduct research on behalf of the public and the media on how the media cover traffic, transportation, pedestrian and bicycle safety issues. There are many factors that can impact the quality of the research, and in the end that is a decision that can be made by the specific grantee or project team. In this case, the Media Network agreed to share the cost of this study in order to promote better research. When conducting a research study it is important to ensure that no undue benefits are gained or that other people's contributions are minimized.
