This paper reviews current management of coast live oak forests with the goal of ensuring sufficient forests are available to supply energy supplies in the absence of new sources and the potential for wood to become scarce due to climate change. To accomplish this goal, the management strategies of using live oak as an energy source, improving the habitat to better support coast live oaks and reducing harvesting pressures are identified. The analysis of the forest survey program found the number of live oaks in the forest has increased dramatically, but this increase is largely due to the increasing intensity of harvesting. The authors argue that the success of the current study will depend on continued improvement of the forest. The study found the number of forest sites in the Lassen County community was increasing from one in 1980 to 10 in 1990 and 23 in 2000. By 2000 approximately 12% of the forest was live oak woodland, more than double what was present in 1990. The paper also shows why the Lassen County forest is a desirable example for other communities. This particular forest is rich in live oaks on the north side of the valley, on lands adjacent to residential homes, and has much of its forest canopy on low-level ridge slopes. Most of the study site is also on ridges where uplift is high, thus minimizing potential erosion. The paper concludes that more information regarding the environmental and management characteristics of the coastal live oak woodland is needed to make the best use of this unique resource. The paper concludes that coastal live oak is at the edge of economic viability by virtue of the significant additional energy requirements of its energy supplies that it is unable to meet, and thus it should be managed as a renewable resource. A more limited and controlled harvesting of coast live oaks would be less detrimental to the forest and provide a more viable option for providing energy to the community.
