) AUDIENCE MEMBER: (Approving motion of the Chair.) MR. CARTER: Let me ask for the order of business first before I call the motion to order. The agenda for this meeting is as follows: The Chairman will be speaking first, and then we'll hear from the other speakers. 1. The Subcommittee on Immigration on the Subcommittee on Economic Development, Labor, and Pensions will be discussing some recent data released by the Department of Commerce's Census Bureau regarding Hispanic residents in the United States. The report is titled “U.S. Immigrant Population in the United States: An Assessment of Census 2000 and 2000 Supplement Data.” The subcommittee will be holding a hearing on this data in the coming weeks. The subcommittee has asked the Director of the Census Bureau to give us a copy of the report. We would really appreciate an opportunity to submit specific questions, suggestions, and comments to the Director for consideration as part of any discussion of this analysis. 2. We would also like to present comments in this report to representatives of state governments, the private sector, and other interested parties. This could include the Federal Government and agencies of the Departments of Agriculture and Housing and Urban Development. 3. We would appreciate hearing from individual businesspersons about their experiences recruiting or keeping jobs and companies in this country. Such comments would help us better understand what businesses have experienced and what businesses are doing to attract U.S. residents. 4. The report notes that the U.S. Census Bureau has had trouble getting non-English speakers to participate in the National Survey of the Workforce on this question because of the lack of appropriate language skills. This is troubling to the Subcommittee, which believes that we should have reliable data on the number of U.S. residents who are foreign-born because of a number of potential positive and negative social and economic effects. 5. The Immigration Subcommittee in the Senate has held several hearings on foreign workers and on immigration reform. The Senate Committee on the Judiciary held hearings in November and January on a proposed revision to the Immigration and Nationality Act aimed at addressing the problems of illegal immigration. The Congressional Budget Office reports that a proposal that will increase the number of legal immigration visas from the present level of 100,000 to 150,000 a year will increase the country's gross domestic product by 3.7 trillion and increase the number of full-time workers in the U.S. economy by almost 4 million.
