The terms used by this chapter are as follows: physical function A person's capacity to carry out manual tasks, perform mental and verbal tasks that are of use in daily life, or maintain one's general health and well-being: to eat, to stand, to stand up, to walk, to sit, to lie down, to dress oneself and the clothes and accessories on one's body, and to protect themselves. (See “Eating and Eating Disorders of Distress,” below, for a description of the use of this term in the measurement of eating disorders. ) social function A person's ability to communicate with others. (See “Communication,” below, for a description of the use of this term.) cognition This refers to any mental, verbal, or motor ability used to acquire knowledge, skills, and abilities; learn new material; solve problems; think abstractly; solve problems analytically; and solve problems problematize. It is used within the concept of physical function. Cognitive impairments include deficits as well as functional and functional impairments. (See below “Differential Diagnosis of Cognitive Impairments.”) Functional impairment is the deterioration or loss of motor (motor skills), cognitive, or other mental abilities to some degree. It can include cognitive, perceptual, or visual issues that produce a loss of vision, for example, or a decrease in verbal communication skills. Functional impairment is different from cognitive impairment and functional impairment is different from functional disorder. Cognitive and functional impairment often coexist and their measurement is most useful when the two concepts are integrated. The following general terms are used: functional impairment: A condition of the mind or body that prevents a person from carrying out any of his/her abilities and that is associated with a specific observable cognitive or functional impairment that may or may not be accompanied by some other observable impairments.
