The main findings of the study appear to be: a) Early in embryonic life the mouse brain is enriched with retroviruses which can be found in the CNS either as the host's endogenous retroviruses or as lentiviruses. b) The viral-driven neurobehavioural phenotypes are specific to a subset of the Murine retroviruses, presumably due to changes in expression of the genes encoding the viral proteins. These are predominantly expressed in the forebrain. c) The molecular basis underlying the neuronal dysfunction in the mice is to be explored through the identification of the specific genes involved and their function. d) The molecular basis underlying the viral-driven neurobehavioural phenotypes is to be explored by comparing the mice with the same underlying neurodegenerative disorder.
